"I went to a restaurant that served 'breakfast at any time...'"

"So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance."

Okay, okay, so the Steven Wright quote is a little dated, it still makes me laugh. But if there's a topic I'm serious about it is breakfast food. I love breakfast food. I have never met a carb I didn't like and along with carbs, breakfast provides a unique blend of salty, sweet, fatty, yeasty delights. I'm not too interested in people who think a half a cantaloupe counts as "breakfast." Nor can I indulge in a luxurious morning meal most days - a hot, multi-course breakfast gets reserved perhaps for Sundays or special occasions. What I want to know from you is: who makes the best breakfast in Des Plaines (other than your spouse or your mom)?

Let's skip the ubiquitous Dunkin Donuts and other fast food options (although if you offered me a Dunkin Donuts buttermilk donut right now I would be powerless to turn you down). I'm talking about ham and eggs, a big stack of flapjacks, omelettes, waffles smothered in whipped cream, and yes, French toast. I see lots of choices for breakfast in Des Plaines, some new and some longtime favorites. You tell me where to head the next time I want a delicious, filling, warm breakfast in a nice setting.

My New Year's resolution is to use this blog and our Web site to help promote local businesses, but I need your input to help me. Let's start with breakfast and see where we go from there.

Write your comments about DP breakfast spots in the "Comments" section below. You can comment anonymously, use your name or login with a Blogger/Google account - it's entirely up to you. I'd prefer positive comments rather than nasty-grams aimed at places you don't like. Let's talk breakfast - you start.

  1. My favorite is Gail's Carriage Inn Restaurant & Pancake House. The food is always excellent and the service is also. I liked the themed offerings at certain points of the year: the Halloween specials are always fun! They have the best breakfasts and brunches that I've had in Des Plaines (or anywhere else, quite frankly) and I know going in that I can order anything on the menu and leave full and happy.

  2. I have two favorites: Porters on Miner Street and Sunrise Cafe on Touhy. Porters is a cash-only diner where you get what you order - no frills, always delicious, and reasonably priced. You not only get breakfast all day, but you can also get lunch in the morning. My husband and daughter often have an olive burger and hashbrowns for breakfast.
Sunrise Cafe has more of a bistro feel with original offerings (including good vegetarian). Everything I've ordered has been excellent and the service is always with a smile.

  3. The Sugar Bowl offers a great breakfast - skillets, pancakes, waffles, etc and homemade orange marmalade. The new management does a great job and the waitresses are friendly and efficient.

IHOP at Touhy and Mannheim (technically it's Rosemont but just across the street from Des Plaines) is also a terrific breakfast place. I know, IHOP is old hat, but this facility has been recently redecorated and is always clean, with friendly service and lots and lots of food. I always have enough to bring to work the next day for lunch. Also, if you like your breakfast food later in the day, and are 60 or older, they have a seniors deal from 3 to 6 PM - buy one meal, get another free. Can't beat that. They also frequently offer good coupons in the local newspapers and mailing. Yea, breakfast!

  4. L&L Snack Shop on Northwest Highway has great food and great friendy service. Great ham! Nice people.

  5. Mrs. V's Restaurant on River Road South of Oakton has my vote for best breakfast. Great food and a friendly atmosphere.

  6. Katie's Kitchen on the corner of Wolf and Central has a great breakfast menu, much more than the usual fare. I love the atmosphere with the fireplace aglow. It makes breakfast seem more cozy!
